Customer rating is 5 of 5  Love this laptop!!!   2010-06-21

This laptop was purchased for my husband and I to share last year. We were replacing our second HP that died. He uses it for internet, spread sheets, and gaming. He is into tech stuff, I am a more casual user. This was a compromise, as he wanted a computer that had huge memory and graphics capabilities. I wanted something less expensive and nice to touch and look at. This Vaio has satisfied both of us handily. In fact, I liked this Sony Vaio so much, I ended up getting a white VGN-NS230E for myself so we didn't have to fight over it. The Sonys have great style and the fit and finish are impressive. Of course, Mac sets the bar high, but you really pay for that. The Vaio line has bridged the style divide from Mac to PC at a lower price point, if you ask me. I really love my Vaio, but a few days ago I was using his and WOW, I forgot how great this model is! The keyboard has the best touch and feel, it is a real joy to use, design and performance wise. I'll never go back to HP, and now I never pine away for a Mac, because I have two Vaios!

I love my Sony laptop but there are a few things that drive me nutz!

The LCD screen is super only if you are looking directly at it. As soon as you get off axis, up/down, left/right the screen washes out. Also, Blu-rays look great but with the reduced color of a DVD the blacks look funny, almost like an x-ray.

Bottom-line the Sony eco-screen sux. And the power supply might be a little under powered since it gets very warm. Finally, Sony doesn't give you much in the way of directions on how to use the various features of this computer, can you say "trial-n-error?"

On the plus side, it's fast and quiet. Love the Blu-ray drive, the color/textured finish and the fact you can turn the display off while the computer is still running, the built-in wireless-N and Sony's video camera. But Sony, what happened to the built-in BlueTooth?

Over-all it's a pretty good computer for the money.

I looked far and wide for a laptop to meet my needs:

- Not too small to use for image editing, and not too large to fit on an airplane food tray
- Dedicated video memory to handle basic video/photo editing (not to mention Vista's hunger for Video memory)
- Lots of RAM and a fast processor
- Blu-Ray reading/burning
- Enough battery life to get me through a streaming movie

The Sony VAIO NW series was a PERFECT match! Despite my concerns about Vista, the laptop runs like a charm and hasn't ever crashed (plus, it comes with a free Windows 7 upgrade that I'm looking forward to). The build quality seems sturdy and the laptop has a clean, stylish appearance that looks cooler than a Mac (in my opinion). The battery that comes with the laptop provides anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 hours of life depending on what I'm doing, and the power settings I've chosen (which, by the way, are very easy to tweak and optimize). I'll probably upgrade to the bigger battery at some point, but I haven't had the need to do so just yet. I've read some reviews that say VAIO's come with too much 'bloatware', but I didn't think it was as bad as Gateways or Dell's that I've purchased in the past. I removed a few pieces of pre-installed software, but it was straightforward and relatively painless.

Why only four stars? The VAIO setup assistant won't go away, and must be forced to close each time the computer is restarted. Even though I've unchecked the "Show startup assistant when computer starts", it keeps nagging every user on the laptop and doesn't respond to user input. I also wish the laptop came with a set of restore CD's - instead, the user must create them manually (though the laptop does provide handy reminders to do so).

Bottom line: I would definitely buy another Sony VAIO, and would highly recommend this particular model to anyone considering it.
