Perfect introduction to microbio 2010-08-31 |

| A must for any med student who doesn't have a strong microbio background. I wish I had this book a year ago! |
so far so good 2010-07-14 |

| Microbiology has always been one of my weaker subjects so I thought this would be really helpful. When I received it in the mail, it was not as short and concise as I had hoped, but perhaps that was only wishful thinking. I haven't read through all of it yet, but when I look things up in it, so far I have been pleased with their explanations. Easy to understand. They also help you with picture memory aids to help you connect things that you have to memorize. Overall, I'm glad I bought this. |
Awful. 2010-05-25 |

| If you want to learn micro via 400 pages of ridiculous pictures and mneumonics, this is the book for you. If you want a concise resource with straight-to-the-point, clinically relevant information, buy Microcards instead. |
A Clear Winner! 2010-05-07 |
| By William Mcfadden (USA) |
In being completely honest about this book, it is fantastic. For a medical student learning microbiology, this is probably the best source that you could get. It presents the material in a fun and memorable way that makes flashcards and mindless memorization really unnecessary. It takes edge off of learning a difficult topic, and it presents an easy reading style that doesn't ramble on. The author does a bang-up job putting in pictures and mnemonics that accurately convey information that you need to know.
Even though I feel strongly that all medical students should give this book a shot, it is not to say that this book is without its weaknesses. The book's chapter on antibiotics, though very helpful, is lacking in the depth and scope of information that is necessary for the USMLE step 1. Additionally, though the first few chapters are very high yield and thorough in their explanation of certain bacteria, chapters later in the book are not as well thought out or as descriptive. You are left with very little information to understand certain parasites and fungi that are a must know for step 1 and a medical career. This book also has no clinical vignettes or questions. Even with these mishaps, I still strongly recommend this book. Rest assured First Aid for USMLE step 1 will more than fill in the gaps that are missing in this book. It did wonders for me in microbiology!
